In the wink of an eye by Colin T Gifford
ISBN 978 1 9164001 3 9
Colin T Gifford is considered by many to be the pioneer of a new genre of railway photography. His first book Decline of Steam, published in 1965 was, and still is, regarded as one of the most influential books of railway photography, in which he used his fine art training to good effect to perfect creative compositions and capture breath-taking atmosphere. Further books followed – Each a Glimpse…, …and gone forever, Steam Finale North, Steam Railways in Industry and Transition. All these books featured his black and white photographs.
in the wink of an eye is the first book to show some of his largely unknown creative photographs using colour film. It follows an exhibition held at Kidderminster Railway Museum and includes those photographs that were displayed plus a number more from his extensive colour archive. Although some of his film shows signs of the passing of time, there is no mistaking the skill of the photographer in terms of the composition and content of the images. These are photographs which just could not be taken again and thus show an important part of our social and railway history.
The title is borrowed, as are the titles Each a Glimpse… …and gone forever from the poem by R. L. Stevenson called From a Railway Carriage.

Caledonian Railway Miscellany by Michael V E Dunn
ISBN 978 916400122
The author, Michael Dunn, has spent the last ten years researching material for this book and amassing a large number of photographs and information to illustrate all aspects of the Caledonian Railway. The book takes the reader beyond the well-known photographs of the Caley’s engines and trains into less familiar corners, conveying some impression of the lives of those who worked for this major transport undertaking.

Of all of the old railway companies which once existed in Britain, the Caledonian was without doubt one of the most charismatic. It is a century now since it ceased to exist but its name is still spoken with affection. Like all industrial concerns of the time, working conditions could be harsh, with long hours and often low pay. Its staff did not view it through rose-tinted glasses but even so it engendered a fierce loyalty and is remembered today for its elegant locomotives, comfortable long distance trains, fine stations and the breath-taking scenery through which it passed. In truth, the Company made much of its money by transporting vast tonnages of goods and materials, and millions of commuters so the romantic scenery had to be contrasted with much industrial grime.
Nevertheless, in everything it undertook, the Caledonian conducted its operations with an innate style and panache. Ten years in the making and containing nearly 400 images, the aim of this book is to take the reader beyond the familiar photographs of the Caley's engines and trains into darker, more obscure corners, and convey some impression of what life was like for those employed by this major transport undertaking.
Hardback, 320 pages with 390 photographs, and printed on quality art paper.
The book has been acclaimed in reviews and is a book that would grace any railway enthusiast's bookcase. The retail price is £39.95 plus £3.50 postage and can be obtained in the same way as listed above for in the wink of an eye.
